“Meet Korea 2022”: Quang Ngai aims at growing cooperation, external relations and friendship with RoK parners and cities

Earlier, in May 2022, a number of key activities within the “Meet Korea 2022” summit was held in Binh Dinh province to promote international cooperation between the south central provinces and the Republic of Korea. Quang Ngai Provincial People’s Committee Vice Chairman Vo Phien led the delegation to join this big event. Within the agenda, he had a meeting with H.E. Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Vietnam Park Noh-wan, and his colleagues to discuss about proposed activities for growing ties between Quang Ngai province and cities and provinces of the Republic of Korea (RoK) in the upcoming time.

At the meeting,  Vice Chairman Vo Phien summarized Quang Ngai’s prospects and potential in terms of the province’s socio-economic development and investment attraction from the Republic of Korea in recent years. He said that the province has many favorable conditions including strategic location within Vietnam’s Central Key Economic Region and economic potentials for growth despites the negative impacts the Covid-19 pandemic tremendously caused to the province over 2 years ago, making it an ideal destination for foreign investment and trade. He stated that the province always stays focused on promoting investment and trade cooperation with the Korean partners. Annually, investment promotion activities are carried out by the provincial government in coordination with Korean agencies such as KOICA, KOTRA, KOCHARM to attract more and more foreign investment as well as mobilize international resources and promote trade activities with Korean agencies and enterprises. He highlighted Quang Ngai’s strong commitments to assisting investors from the first stage of investment proposals, during the operation of their projects, and to the final stage of project commencement.

Vice Chairman revealed that Quang Ngai is calling for RoK investment in the fields of high-tech industries, clean industries; supporting industries, logistics services and labor intensive industries. At the same time, priorities will be given to attracting investment in a number of industries such as textiles and garments, shoe-making, foodstuffs, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), electronic component assembly and automobile supporting industry, light industries serving sectors of petroleum and chemicals, high-tech agriculture, seaport and industrial park infrastructure construction, etc.

Vice Chairman Vo Phien hoped that H.E Ambassador will give his supports in strengthening the ties between Quang Ngai with Korean partners in the fields of investment, trade, tourism, culture, labor training and export. He also suggested that the two sides should focus on setting up twin relations. Quang Ngai is now looking forward to establishing the friendship and sister relations with one city or province of the Republic of Korea. Once established successfully, this could bring a variety of opportunities to both Quang Ngai and Korean enterprises to expand their foreign  investment and trade activities and global markets as well. He also pledged that the province will create favorable conditions for RoK enterprises during their business operation for mutual benefits and development.

H.E. Ambassador Park Noh-wan agreed that the embassy will take every effort to give assistance and contributions to expanding mutual cooperation, exchanges and enhancing the friendship and sister relations between the two sides. Furthermore, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Vietnam will actively provide support for the province to establish the relationship with a localitiy of the Republic of Korea, particularly the brother or sister relation between Ly Son island of Quang Ngai province and JeJu island in Korea.

He said that, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Vietnam-RoK diplomatic ties, it is significant for the two sides to focus on taking particular measures to increase diverse cooperation activities between Quang Ngai  and the RoK. The partnership between Quang Ngai and Korean enterprises, and the twin relations between the two sides, if being established successfully, will be a good model of local cooperation between the two countries. The two sides should concentrate on the fields of education and training, particularly human resource training, labor training with much focus on Korean language training for Vietnamese workers to be sent to RoK and labor export, investment and trade, tourism and culture. At present, many projects invested by RoK enterprises have effectively and efficiently done in Quang Ngai, bettter proving the great success in international cooperation between Quang Ngai and RoK partners.

Currently, as of May 2022, 13 FDI projects of Korean investors have been licensed by Quang Ngai government with a total registered investment capital of around $US 350 million; in which, 11 projects are in Dung Quat Economic Zone, 02 other projects in Quang Ngai provincial industrial parks. Up to now, 07 projects have been completed and put into operation, 06 projects are under investment.

Among the 13 enterprises mentioned above, Doosan Enerbility  Co., Ltd., its former name being Doosan Vina Heavy Industry Co., Ltd, is the Korean enterprise with numerous outstanding contributions to the development of Quang Ngai province. Up to now, as a leading plant expert of the power and water industry offering energy solutions for thermal power, nuclear power and renewable energy, the company has employed nearly 1,700 laborers, 80% of whom are the native Quang Ngai. The company's products manufactured in Dung Quat Economic Zone have been exported to many countries around the world. Doosan anually carry out many charity programs and fund humanitarian aid in the fields of healthcare, medical care and education to help local people and communities improve their living standards and health which bring significance and practical benefits to the communities in the province and the project area.
