On December 2, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the International Wildlife Conservation Organization (FFI) in Vietnam and the Green Viet Water Biodiversity Conservation Center (GreenViet) organized a consultation workshop on solutions to conservation of the grey-shanked douc langurs in Ba To district, with the participation of scientists, representatives of Binh Dinh, Gia Lai, Kon Tum and Quang Nam localities.

the grey-shanked douc langurs belong to group 1B in the list of critically endangered and rare forest animals which is a primate species endemic to Vietnam recorded in the Vietnam Red Book and the IUCN Red List of Conservation Union international nature.

In the world, the gray-shanked douc langur is found only in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

In Vietnam, it is estimated that the grey-shanked douc langurs in the wild is only 2,200 - 2,500, distributed in Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces.

According to the survey, recorded by the authorities, there are currently about 20 herds of gray-shanked douc langur, with the number of over 200 animals, living in protected forest areas in Ba To district, Quang Ngai province.

Over the past time, the Government has issued many policies on conservation and sustainable development of the gray-shanked douc langur, in order to conserve rare genetic resources.

In Quang Ngai, in order to promptly have a plan to conserve and the grey-shanked douc langurs, the agriculture sector and the provincial forest rangers have also coordinated with units and organizations specializing in wildlife research to investigate the population status of this primate in protection forests in Ba To district.

Along with strengthening propaganda for forest owners and local people about the value of forest biodiversity, the provincial forest rangers have stepped up patrols and strictly dealt with illegal animal hunting activities.

At the workshop, scientists and functional agencies proposed many immediate and long-term solutions to preserve the grey-shanked douc langurs population in the wild.

Of which, it is worth noting that it is necessary to propose early establishment of a nature reserve in the protection forests where the grey-shanked douc langurs are recorded in Ba To.

This area is adjacent to protected areas of Binh Dinh province, connecting the corridor, creating a large space for gray-shanked douc langurs to live and develop.
