The solution of stopping a seawater pump helps BSR save over 1.2 million USD/year

The seawater cooling system of Dung Quat Oil Refinery includes 5 electric pumps P-3401A/B/C/D/E and one Diesel engine pump P-3401F.

Each pump's design capacity is 10,000 m3 /hour, supplying sea water to cool the steam condensers of steam generators (STG) generators, MAB and WGC compressors at RFCC workshops and weekly water cooling systems fully sealed.

In normal operation, the system operates 4 electric pumps to provide about 32,000 to 38,000 m3/hour of seawater to consumers, with a power consumption capacity of about 8 MW.

During the restart of the Plant after the 4turnaround period in September 2020, BSR operated 3 sea water pumps to test the operating parameters of each pump and the operating conditions of the entire plant system.

The test results show that the plant can operate safely with 3 seawater pumps when the demand for sea water is not more than 35,000 m3/hour.

From the research and testing results achieved, BSR's engineers continue to perfect relevant procedures, documents and operating procedures to implement long-term solutions to optimize system operation. cooled by sea water to save energy.

On January 12, 2021, BSR officially applied the solution of "operating a seawater cooling system with 3 pumps".

Up to now, the seawater system and the Plant are operating safely and stably, reducing the power consumption capacity of the seawater system from 8 MW/4 pump to 6.4 MW/3 pump, equivalent to a saving of about 210 USD/hour.

According to the evaluation results of BSR, each year the seawater cooling system can operate with 3 pumps from January to July and will contribute to saving BSR over 1.2 million USD/year.

Optimizing and improving the energy efficiency of the Plant is a central, important and regular task of the Company.

In the first quarter of 2021, BSR has successfully implemented 6/29 energy saving solutions, along with many operational optimization solutions, which have greatly reduced the plant's EII energy index from 107.1% in the year 2020 to an average of less than 103%.

According to calculations by Solomon Organization, a 1% decrease in EII will contribute to an increase in efficiency for BSR from 2 to 2.5 million USD/year depending on the price of crude oil.

In the coming time, BSR will focus on promoting investment solutions, renovation and upgrading to create a breakthrough in reducing consumption and improving energy efficiency; continue to implement long-term research programs related to optimization in production, economical use of energy, and use of low-cost renewable energy sources in order to reduce costs and improve capacity competition, creating a position for sustainable development in the long term.
