The PPC works with the UNDP’ Coordinator

On September 08, the Provincial People's Committee worked with the Working Delegation of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Global Environment Facility's Small Grants Programs (GEF SGP). Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Hoang Tuan chaired the meeting.

GEF with environmental protection projects

At the meeting, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen - UNDP National Coordinator shared information related to GEF SGP activities in a number of localities throughout the country, as well as the meaning and value of these projects.

The Small Grants Programme (SGP) is a corporate programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) implemented by the UNDP since 1992. SGP grantmaking spread over 125 countries promotes community-based innovation, capacity development, and empowerment through sustainable development projects of local civil society organizations with special consideration for indigenous peoples, women, and youth.

SGP has supported over 20,000 community-based projects in biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, prevention of land degradation, protection of international waters, and reduction of the impact of chemicals, while generating sustainable livelihoods.

This programme provides grants of up to $50,000 directly to local communities including indigenous people, community-based organizations, and other non-governmental groups for projects in Biodiversity, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, Land Degradation and Sustainable Forest Management, International Waters and Chemicals.

Meaningful small projects in Quang Ngai

Starting since 1999, UNDP - GEF/SGP in Vietnam has sponsored 183 projects in 45 provinces and cities across the country, including Quang Ngai. Specifically, Quang Ngai province has been supporting 03 projects on livelihood development, ecosystem conservation, and environmental protection in Binh Son and Ba To districts.

Currently, UNDP - GEF/SGP is researching and coordinating with a number of agencies in the province to support the implementation of somce projects, including the Project "Strengthening the capacity of salt-farming communities in preserving traditional salt fields, salt industry culture, protecting the environment and biodiversity on Sa Huynh salt fields"; the Project "Conserving seaweed field in coastal communes of Binh Son district associated with sustainable livelihoods of the community".

Speaking at the meeting, Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Hoang Tuan thanked the UNDP for supporting Quang Ngai province to implement a number of projects in the province in recent times, contributing to change the awareness and consciousness of rural communities, especially ethnic minorities and remote areas on environmental protection, sustainable livelihood development associated with conservation and promotion of cultural and traditional values of residential communities.

For projects that proposed to be implemented in the upcoming time, Tuan requested agencies, organizations and localities to speed up the implementation of prescribed procedures; develop a specific plan for each project for effective implementation.

In particular, the PPC’s Vice Chairman requested agencies and units in the province to coordinate closely with the Program, creating the most favorable conditions to implement projects in the province.
