PPC's chairman gives directions on preventing drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion in 2024

According to the Quang Ngai Province Hydrometeorological Station, it is forecast that in the first 6 months of 2024, rainfall in the province is likely to be approximate or lower than the multi-year average. 

The possibility of drought, water shortage, saltwater intrusion at the end of the winter-spring season 2023-2024 and summer-autumn 2024 is quite high.

This will cause a risk of water shortage for people and production in the province.

To ensure water sources for people's livelihood and agricultural production in 2024, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to regularly inspect and monitor weather developments and water source situation.

The Department will support localities and units to proactively implement measures to prevent and combat drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion to ensure efficiency and to save water to serve people and production in 2024. 

The Department shall promulgate the overall drought and saltwater intrusion prevention plan in 2024 in the province. 

The Department shall summarize and report on the situation of water sources, drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion, and promptly propose to the Provincial People's Committee specific anti-drought measures, suitable to the actual situation at each time of drought occurrence.

The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to:

Develop and approve the Plan on drought and saltwater intrusion prevention and control in 2024.

Proactively implement plans on prevention and control of drought and saltwater intrusion according to its competence.

Submit to competent authorities for consideration and financial support for prevention and control of drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion when the demand for funds exceeds the balance capacity of the locality.

Regularly monitor meteorological and hydrological forecasts, weather developments, water source inventories to have reasonable water use plans, ensuring services for people and production in district-level areas. 

Instruct the People's Committees of communes, wards, townships and grassroots irrigation organizations to regularly dredge canals, clear streams, and repair drain gates for leaking water.

Build temporary dams to prevent salinity, dig ponds, drill wells to pump water for daily life and prevent drought for crops in case of drought. 

Propagate and guide people in economical use of water, apply advanced, water-saving irrigation methods for plants.
