Summarizing 10 years of food security implementation
10:48 25/03/2020
On March 18, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc chaired an online conference evaluating 10 years of implementation of the project "National food security until 2020"
Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Le Viet Chu and Standing Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tang Binh chaired at Quang Ngai Bridge Point.
A report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that after 10 years of implementing the National Food Security Project, Vietnam ensures food security by itself with food output per capita at a relatively high level of 525kg / year ( ranked 6th in the world)
It also contributes to ensuring food security for many other countries, when 5-7 million tons of rice are exported each year, becoming the 3rd country with largest rice export in the world after India and Thailand.
It is expected that 14 targets will be achieved and exceeded .In the period of 2009-2019, the agriculture sector has a good growth rate of 2.61% / year , contributing 15% of GDP.
Export turnover increased by 8.99% on average. There were seven items with export turnover of over 1 billion USD / year. Science and technology developed a new increase in production and contributed over 30% of the added value of agricultural production.
In 2019, the area of rice land nationwide will be over 4 million hectares, with a yield of 5.6 tons / ha, double that of Thailand and 1.5 times that of India . Vietnamese rice has been exported to 150 countries and territories.
Currently, the whole country has nearly 600 thousand hectares of large fields, of which rice area accounts for 89.2%.
After 10 years of project implementation, Quang Ngai province has also achieved remarkable results, initially planting a number of new crop varieties with high yield and quality.
Compared to 2008, the province's rice production increased by 24%, maize increased by 12%, vegetables of all kinds increased by 28%.
Animal husbandry has also shifted from small-scale animal husbandry to farms and family farms, in association with enterprises in the process of production and consumption.
At the conference, ministries, localities, research agencies, experts and scientists discussed and assessed the difficulties, challenges and forecast of food demand in the coming time.
They also proposed views, objectives, tasks and solutions to firmly ensure national food security by 2030.
Specifically, Vietnam's population is forecasted to reach 104 million by 2030, so the demand for food and foodstuffs continues to increase in both quantity and quality.
To ensure food security and meet demand sale, processing, breeding, storage and export, Vietnam plans to use effectively 3.3-3.6 million hectares of rice land to produce about 35 million tons of rice / year .
Many major tasks and solutions have also been raised: to invest in modernizing agricultural and rural infrastructure; strengthen research, application and transfer of science and technology; improve the quality of human resources; renovate and develop production organizations.
